When developing games, a number of things must be done. These include thinking up of a story, devising gameplay, putting together graphics and assembling a team of developers. When looking to assemble a team of developers for said game, you will want to consider eight things that will allow you to make the best game possible. These include training, personality, experience, and work ethic of the team members. It is also important to consider the expertise, genre, salary and availability of the developers on your team. With these things in mind, you’ll be sure to get the best team possible and make a great game.

The first thing you will want to consider when forming a game developer team is the experience of the team members. It is important to have people on your team who have proven ability to get the job done. This way, you will have people who know what to do in a given situation and can help bring vital assistance to the development of a game.

This is something that you must always look for in a development team. This includes the knowledge and skills that the developer has gotten to do this job. With proper training, a developer will have the necessary skills and knowledge to design a game, as well as make it work.

Another thing that you will want to consider when putting together a game development team is the personality of the developer. It is important to have people who are easy to work with and will go along with what the team has in mind. Having team members who are like minded will allow the entire team to put together a quality game without any problems or conflicts.

Work Ethic

You’ll benefit by having developers who are able to specialize in things such as graphics or storyline. This way, you can have each member of the team know all about a specific function, culminating in an entire team with broad expertise.

You want team members who know about many different genres, so that all together, you can create games that appeals to fans from all over the spectrum of gameplay. As with all industries, you want developers on your team who command an affordable salary. You’re likely worried about compensation for these in demand types, but it will be a worthy investment. That said, be cognizant – don’t overpay either. Getting developers at a market rate salary will enable you to get the help you need on your team at an affordable rate. If you want them around for the long haul, you should also offer superior benefits and time off. Many creative and educational professionals are used to 4 or 5 weeks of vacation a year alone, so keep this in mind.

Lastly, you need to consider the  availability of the development team members, both weekly and in the long term. This is the amount of hours they can work and how often. It’s important to have members who can work for as long as necessary to complete the game, because game development is not an industry that lends itself well to turnover. For instance, applicants who “want to go back to school” should be carefully vetted, so that you’re not left in the dust after they’ve padded their resumes a bit.
